Underground rap/hip hop is where you'll find the genre intact. Mainstream rap/hip hop has morphed into a blend of r'n'b/club music, with more focus on catchy hooks than conscious and complex lyricism.

Well everything changes over time, for better or for worse. Back in the 1950's, rock and roll was Little Richard, then it was the Beatles, then there were sub genres like punk rock, glam rock, grunge, metal.

You probably mean why don't people make rap like it was in the 1990's? I guess since music doesn't sell the way it used to in the 90's, people are trying to appeal to the masses so they are essentially making pop music now.
Remember when there was this huge war against rap music? Politicians wanted to get it banned for talking about drugs and crime and cursing too much? Good ole days. LOL
