Question: What to do about a very aggressive dog? Tried to attack my dog.?

Was walking my Yorkie today (he's small, but not super tiny, about 10 lbs) when a black and white medium-sized dog (I would say 40 lbs or so) started running toward my dog and me. He was already growling when he was running and it seemed like just a second before he got to us. He started chasing my Yorkie (who was on a leash!) and I was trying to say no very loud and very firm and he was snapping at him (my dog). My dog growled back and this just made things worse. I was able to pick up my dog and he just had some of the saliva from the other dog on him; no puncture wounds. The dog Tried to get my dog in my arms.

All this time, his owners were just standing by their truck and yelling his name. One is an older woman. They live on the street behind me and I've seen the dog before, it is just usually chained up or in the house. They have a 'Beware of Dog' sign in their yard. It was obvious the dog had escaped and they were trying to get him back.

There are several other dogs in my neighborhood (small; Chihuahua, Daschaund, Shih Tzu) and many children and some people have their grandchildren visit often.

So, I am not sure what to do. It happened about two hours ago and I am still shakey. My dog is fine, but I never want that to happen again. I am not sure if the dog was truly attacking (I think so, but could have been worse) or just very aggressively trying to play.

I was only able to get away because the owners were there and the dog would start to run toward me, then run toward the owners, and so on.

The owner has had the dog for about 1.5 years or so I would say and this hasn't happened before. So, should I just let it slide? Should I have called someone or still call someone? I was so upset I didn't go talk to them.

Am thinking about just warning my neighbors (or will it cause them to worry too much?) and definitely calling someone if I see the dog out again.

Answer:

call animal control center because if that dog gets loose again it may hurt someone

animal control

Running AND growling is not a good sign. The dog didnt wait till meeting yours to show dominance and aggression. Sounds like you have a problem dog on the block. I would report it. He didnt bite but he did try to aggress your dog. It may not have been serious this time but why wait till it is. Complain to local animal control, the dog in the least broke leash law by leaving its property to harass you on a public street. At least there will be a report on file for the next time the dog gets loose. Always back yourself up with paper work. Then no one can say then didnt know the dog wasnt aggressive.

you need to call the animal control right away
If he attacks like that, 911
EDIT..I know it sounds bad, but if I were you I would carry protection, like a big stick..just incase he tries to attack you.

Report the aggressive dog to animal control or law enforcement.

plz report the dog it would do everyone on the block a favor. this dog needs help. it could be extremely dangerous. it might not have shots and it could easily kill a small dog. call someone b4 anyone gets hurt.
good luck!

I have a similar problem. sadly, the police and animal control do little if nothing unless theres actually an attack. so i would go over nd talk to them. tell them you contacted animal control, and the next time this happens you'll call again. tell them that animal control will take there dog away. or something like that
