Solid ground.
Ah, motion sick dogs. I got a new dog from the pet store about a month ago. It was a 45 minute drive back home, and she threw up on me. i'm emotophobic. i didn't handle it very well. So we immediately started training her to get better in the car.
First, don't feed your dog before you get in the car. if you just fed your dog and need to go somewhere with him, wait at least an hour. Then take him out to go use the bathroom.
You can also give the dog a little bit of ginger or a small jelly bean before you get in the car. (i dont know why it works, i've never done it before, but it seems to have worked for other dog owners)
First, start out with him in the car while it's off. Keep the windows down but sit in there and give him chew toys and stuff. Then eventually turn the car on and stay there. He'll get used to being in the car itself, which will make him a little less scared and less likely to get sick.
when you think he's ready to go on the ride, while in the car, leave all the windows down and drive slow. Your dog will want to stick his head out the window like most dogs do. Let him, but make sure he doesn't jump out! My dog runs all around the car jumping from window to window, so we have to put her on a leash to make sure she doesn't jump out (she's done it before).
Take the dog around the block maybe twice and then go back home. remember to drive slow until your dog gets used to it, then gradually pick up speed. Start going on longer trips each day or week and see how he does :)
If he doesn't drool or yawn alot in the car anymore, or even get sick, he should be fine. also if you have a truck you can put him in the back but make sure he won't jump out. put him on a leash if you have to.
another thing is, some dogs get motion sick because they associate the car with places like the vets office. don't only take him for a car ride if he's going to the vet. take him to a dog park or other places he'll like :)
good luck! :)
