Question: Is it degrading to women to value their virginities?

I was watching Anderson Cooper the other day, and he was doing a segment on some religious communities that now have a custom of holding ceremonies to honor a girl's virginity, They're sort of like wedding ceremonies in a way. It's a very formal event, with young girls performing dances and men and women dressed up and so on, and the main event is the young lady for whom the party is thrown pledging her virginity to her father, saying it belongs to him until she meets her husband, and she will honor him by not giving it to anyone else.

Anderson's always been a leftist sort of guy, and naturally, the women in the audience were pretty offended by this, and applauded loudly when he asked why there was nothing similar for boys. At that point, his guest pointed out that they did have something similar for boys, and the show's feminist "expert" that they brought on to comment on it said that the ceremony for boys involves promising not to dishonor another man by taking his daughter's virginity, and she was saying this is a big problem because the emphasis is still on women's sexuality, and it promotes a view of women as sex objects.

Now, my question is is that really true, and what is so offensive about valuing a woman's virginity? Feminists have always been complaining that men are respected more than women. For once, something is only for women and not for men. If the roles were reversed, and it was men's virginities that were being valued, you can be sure the feminists would be in an uproar about it. Why is it that whenever something is just for women, it's automatically assumed that it must be degrading to them, yet when something is only for men, it's assumed it must be positive for them?

Are feminists really just people who can't accept that the grass is always greener on the other side?

Answer:

I don't know if its degrading but it is kind of stupid. I'm not sure if would want to date someone who has a long history of not doing anything fun because they might just never do it or be unenthusiastic about it.

It's not degrading but it certainly seems old-fashioned and the fact that "the young lady for whom the party is thrown pledging her virginity to her father, saying it belongs to him until she meets her husband, and she will honor him by not giving it to anyone else" sounds a bit like treating the girl like the father's property.

Besides, I could care less about this since virginity isn't important in the first place.

Don't bring that "SLUT/STUD" FEMINIST BS.

FEMALES get angry at the thought of girls having plenty of Sex. Men simply capitalize on it for comedic insults, but FEMALES are the ones that generally have issues with it.

FYI: A girl that has PLENTY OF SEX is protected by the law, but a man that does the same thing is the FIRST suspect in rape/accusations.

This is why FEMINISTS are the ones trying to get TV shows (CREATED BY MEN) off the air because they show girls that are "sluts" or have alot of sex in a positive manner. They are even trying to get COMIC BOOKS taken down that do that. (CATWOMAN, DC COMICS, etc.)

There's an implication that women are only valued insofar as they are pure and virginal. This is why society has an idea that women who have a lot of sex are skanks and men who have a lot of sex are congratulated.

Everything offends some feminist, everything, if it doesn't give women an unfair advantage it will offend them. As long as the young girls and boys have no issue with this, I don't see how it's hurting anyone. And quite frankly it's none of their business. Not everyone is going to share the feminist way of thinking (that includes women) and it's about time they accepted that.

That is stupid. I have sex with incubuses all the time. This is the green side.

No its not degrading to value that.

Yes about the grass is greener thing!

Nope its good

i hate to play the blame the media card here but imo shows like that are nothing but sensationalized propaganda. and ive come to accept the fact that feminists are not often credible when talking gender. then you have a 3rd party who is not very credible which is the religious crowd. all that was missing is that guy steve & the crowd yelling....JERRY JERRY JERRY !!!

and if someone wants to value their virginity then they should not be denigrated for it. also feminists should respect other peoples views such as religious people. part of equality is accepting others differences.

You'll come to realize, that the "slightest crap" is degrading. What feminists don't realize is, is that they are constantly reminding people of who the "weaker gender" is.

Have you seen the show, "Spongebob Squarepants?" I damn gaurantee, that if male and female characters swapped genders, there'd be a huge case on it being degrading to females...
