Question: Do you think the photo spreads in magazines like Playboy and Cosmopolitan are degrading to women and men?

I've never thought so. Never understood why some women get so upset when they see a photo spread in Playboy or Maxim with a naked/semi-naked girl and they start ranting about how it's degrading to all women. Wouldn't it just be degrading to that one woman in the picture? I mean, really, it isn't even degrading...

Or the pictures in Cosmo magazine with the half-naked male models and whatnot. I'm a guy and when I see that I don't get offended. Cosmo is basically the female version of Maxim, so why do some women get so upset over the sexy pictorials in Maxim/Playboy and believe them to be degrading to all women?

I realize not all women are like this. My girlfriend could care less if there are naked girls in Playboy and I'm looking at them. She isn't offended by nudity.

Do you think the photo spreads in Playboy/Maxim are degrading to women? If so why? If not, why?
Do you think the photo spreads in Playgirl/Cosmo are degrading to men? If so why? If not, what's the difference between Playboy and Playgirl?

Just curious. Me and my girlfriend were having this conversation yesterday and both agree that a nude photo of a person isn't degrading to the entire gender, just to that one person and only if that person in that photo finds it to be degrading. Why should we as people feel that if someone fantasizes about us that we should feel degraded? Shouldn't we be flattered?

Your opinions?

Answer:

Even if it is degrading for women and men, it's still awesome for men and women, so I don't care, really.

Getting naked and being nude is not degrading. What make these pictures degrading is "money". They sell their nude pictures to tittillate, to excite and cause a reaction in people with unnatural poses putting enphasis on the sexual parts of their bodies. Those pictures on playboy or Cosmopolitan are not artistic, they are commercial photos to advertise and promote sex.

the only way this would degrade them is if they were forced...willingly appearing, negotiating payment, and managing the exposure into a career, even one unrelated, seems empowering to me...

I think as a rule the people who say it is degrading have self-confidence issues themselves. They resent someone else doing something that they could not do themselves (more often because they lack the confidence about their own body/appearance).

I don't think it degrades anyone if they are willing and happy with it.

It's not degrading to women, they choose to do it. So they're happy, the men who admire their bodies are happy. The only ones who complain are gays and ugly chicks who aren't getting laid.

Also, Playboy is big money - it's a brand name and helps create numerous jobs thus helping the economy and reducing poverty.

No, I don't. Not unless they were forced into it, of course. We all have freedom of choice so if someone chooses to sell naked pics of themselves, go ahead. Just don't think my fat a$$ would do the same lol.

No, they satisfy a basic human sexual instinct.

I don't nessasarily think that they're degrading, just that they set unrealistic standards. But those don't last long anyway.

I mean, if a guy were to see only the pictures of women and assume that that's the minimum standard and settle for nothing less, he'd be out of luck because the only girls who look like that are the ones who model in those magazines. And as soon as realizes this, he'd give up and get used to normal-looking people. So really, no harm no foul.

Same for the male models, yeah they're nice to look at :-) , but I wouldn't think that every guy looks like that.

I personally would never model like that, but if you're fine with it, go ahead. (I don't mean you specifically, lol)

Good luck, hope I helped!

No. I think Playboy centerfolds are more artsy than anything. Women (and men) have been portrayed in the nude since we first learned how to draw, paint, and sculpt.

Case and point - I absolutely love some of the Playboy centerfolds, but I don't masturbate to them as if they were lewd porn. I look and them, and think of how aesthetically pleasing they are - not what I'd do to them in a dirty fantasy.
