Question: Book Plot too similar?

Okay so my friend has been telling me about a Book he is planning to write and I think it sounds a bit like the Hunger Games, any opinions or things I could tell him to make it more original? Or am I looking too much into it and its good?

Okay so basically its after the apocalypse and the world fell apart, so they decided to put together a country that would be a utopia. The encased the capitol in a glass dome and built regions around it. Believing that the children are the future each region has a school where they train them for an event like the olympics and each year a seventeen year old boy and girl (one the smartest and one the strongest) represent the region and whichever team wins gets their region an easy year while the others get minimal and struggle. Many years later a girl competes and in her interviews talks about how she sees a more fair world where everyone can work for what they get and it doesn't depend on a competition. During the last part of the competition there is an "accident" and she is killed. Now (this is when the book starts) nearly 17 years later her younger sister is chosen for the competition and with her mentors help ( a girl who was her sisters friend and won the year after) tells her of her sisters plan for a better country and she decides she wants to help make it happen.

Thats basically all he has so far. What do you think? Is it too similar? Should he change things? Thanks for your opinions and help! He's a good friend and a really good writer so I don't want him to waste his time on something that isn't good, thanks again! :)

Relation Questions:

Answer:

It's very similar. Very.

All literature ideas are just regurgitated ideas. Tell him to write the whole thing, then put it in a box for five years. By then, everyone will have forgotten about the Hunger Games and they'll praise him for his literary originality.

The Plot is DEFINITELY along the same lines of the Hunger Games. Separate regions... competitions...post-apocalypse...trainin… Way way way too similar. Had this idea been thought of much earlier, I'm sure it would have been a major success. It is an excellent idea to work with though. Perhaps your friend can manipulate it into something different? You're right: He shouldn't waste time writing something that will probably accuse him of "stealing" ideas.

Good Luck!

Dude the whole point of this site is to ask questions with full anonymity. The whole "My friend" charade is pointless. And yes, this is FAR too similar to the Hunger Games. Make your own ideas, it's one thing to be influenced by something else but don't just recreate it completely

He should finish it. When he finishes the first draft is the time to start criticizing. New ideas will come to him as he develops characters and he will probably come up with a completely different book at the end. Think of how many lawyer writing courtroom novels there are.

Yes, your plot is too similar to the Hunger Games.

Lose the "my friend". It's obviously you.
